Arrived in Dumont d’Urville

Received a mail from François FT3YL. French vessel Astrolabe could not arrive to Dumont d’Urville. They had to stop at 120 km before french base due to ice field. They had to go to Dumont d’Urville base by helicopter.

They were able to bring with them only few personnal effects. So, all radio equipments is still on board Astrolabe. François hopes to have it with the next trips of the french vessel.

So, he won’t be QRV before 2 or 3 months.

He is well, but he has many many many works to do.

Preparations Part I

This step is very important before leaving. We need to anticipate all the trouble, all the needs for one year. I can carry with me 120 kg (on the boat) and 20 kg (on the plane). But within this 120kg I need to anticipate for 1 year… One year of soap, shampoo, clothes, computer, movies and also the radio equipment.

We need to send the 120 kg by ship 3 months before the leaving, and split in 3 metallics cases, so 40kg per case maximum.

Case 1: 85 cm x 50 cm x 35 cm, 9,5 kg (empty)

Case 2: 85 cm x 50 cm x 35 cm, 9,5 kg (empty)

Case 3: 110 cm x 60 cm x 40cm, 14,5 kg (empty)

So the payload is approximatively 86,5 kg for 12 months minimum. We need to deal with it. 😀

Next step, buy and check all the radio equipment.

I’m a beginner in HF radio but I want to try to install a ham radio station at Dumont d’Urville a french scientific base.

My job is my priority, I can transmit juste only during my spare time. I’m not a DXpedition. This activity will be secondary to the scientific work.

During this mission of 1 year in Antarctica, my QSL manager is F6KPQ a french radioclub in Britany. http://f6kpq.org/
